The Importance of Soil

How Important is Soil?

Soil is one of the most important elements in our gardens. It is the foundation of healthy plants and is responsible for transferring water and nutrients to the roots. Soil can be improved by adding organic matter such as compost, leaf litter, and manure. This will help to increase the soil’s water-holding capacity and nutrient levels. Sandy soils can be improved by adding organic matter and by planting cover crops to hold the soil in place. Clay soils can be improved by adding organic matter, breaking up clumps of clay, and planting deep-rooted plants.
