Bulk mulch beats bagged on price

One cubic yard equals about thirteen 2-cubic-foot bags. Bought loose from a yard, that same volume typically costs less than half what the bags cost at a big-box store — which is why most repeat buyers switch to bulk once they have somewhere to put it.

A cubic yard of mulch weighs only 400–800 lbs, far less than soil, so a pickup can usually manage two or three yards in one trip.

Choosing a mulch type

Double-ground hardwood is the common default and knits together well on slopes. Dyed mulch holds colour longer but fades unevenly. Pine bark is lighter and floats, so it travels in heavy rain. Cedar resists decay and carries a strong scent.

Ask how long the pile has been sitting. Fresh, hot mulch can scorch tender plants, and a yard that turns its piles will tell you straight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much mulch do I need?

One cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at three inches deep — the depth most arborists recommend for moisture retention without smothering roots.

Is bulk mulch cheaper than bagged?

Substantially. A cubic yard equals roughly thirteen 2-cubic-foot bags and usually costs less than half as much loose.

What is the best mulch for flower beds?

Double-ground hardwood or pine bark for most beds. Avoid fresh, un-composted mulch directly against tender stems.

How often should mulch be replaced?

Top up annually to maintain three inches. Hardwood breaks down and feeds the soil, so the layer thins each season.
