How Much Does a Pallet of Sod Cover?
A pallet of sod usually covers about 450 square feet — a square roughly 21 by 21 feet. But pallet size is regional, not standard, and the range runs from 400 to 600 square feet.
So the useful rule is: order in square feet and let the yard tell you how many pallets that is. Ordering "three pallets" can mean 1,200 square feet or 1,800 depending on who you call.

Individual pieces are usually 16 by 24 inch slabs, which is 2.67 square feet each, so a 450 square foot pallet is about 169 slabs. Some growers supply rolls instead, typically 2 by 5 feet.
Add 5–10% for cuts
A rectangle wastes almost nothing. Curves, beds, trees and paths waste a lot — every curve means cutting a slab and binning the offcut.
- Simple rectangle: add 5%
- Curved edges or island beds: add 10%
- Lots of small areas: add 15%
Running short is worse than over-ordering. Sod is cut to order, a second delivery costs another fee, and turf cut a week later can be visibly different in colour.
Weight, and whether your driveway cares
A pallet of sod weighs 1,500 to 3,000 lb depending on how wet it is — soil is most of the weight, and sod is delivered damp. Three pallets is comfortably over two tons on a truck with a forklift on the back.
That is the same conversation as any bulk delivery: will a dump truck damage my driveway applies here too, and a forklift concentrates weight on smaller wheels than a tipper does.
It will not wait for you
Sod is a living product with a short shelf life. On a pallet it begins composting within about 24 hours in warm weather, and by day two or three the middle of the stack can be yellow and sour.
- Lay it the day it arrives, ideally within a few hours.
- Book delivery for the morning so you have the day.
- If it must wait, get it into shade, keep it damp, and break the stack down rather than leaving it tight.
- In real heat, treat 24 hours as the outside limit.

Do not forget the topsoil
Sod is about an inch of soil and grass. It is not a substitute for a root zone, and laid on poor ground it stays alive for a season and then thins out.
