The grades, and what each is for
<strong>Mason sand</strong> is fine and washed, for mortar and stucco. <strong>Concrete sand</strong> is coarse and angular, for concrete mixes and paver bedding. <strong>Play sand</strong> is washed and screened fine, for sandboxes. <strong>Fill sand</strong> is unwashed and cheapest, for backfill.
The substitution that fails most often is play sand under pavers. Its grains are rounded, so they roll rather than lock, and the pavers settle within a season. Use concrete sand.
How it is sold
Sand goes by the ton, like gravel — about 1.3 tons to the cubic yard. Describe the job rather than naming a product: regional names vary more than the materials do, and concrete sand is "torpedo sand" in parts of the Midwest.
