One delivery instead of three
Full-line landscape supply yards stock soil, mulch, stone, boulders, edging and pavers together. That matters more than it sounds: combining materials into a single delivery avoids paying separate trip charges to two or three different suppliers, and trip fees are flat.
Loose material is normally priced by the cubic yard while stone is priced by the ton, so compare quotes carefully — the two units are not interchangeable and a cheap-sounding per-ton price can work out dearer.
Getting the aggregate grade right
Road base, often called crusher run or 21AA, compacts hard and is the correct choice under pavers and driveways. Clean washed stone such as #57 drains freely and belongs in French drains and trench backfill. Pea gravel looks good underfoot but migrates and needs edging to stay put.
Bring your project dimensions. A yard can calculate tonnage far more accurately than an online estimator, because they know how their own material settles.

How much gravel do I need?
One ton of aggregate covers about 100 square feet at two inches deep. Most yards set a minimum for delivery.
Can I pick up material myself?
Most yards load pickups and trailers during business hours. A half-ton pickup handles about one yard of soil or two to three of mulch.
