How gravel is sold
Gravel is sold <strong>by the ton</strong>, not the cubic yard — the unit that catches out anyone used to buying topsoil. One cubic yard weighs roughly 1.4 tons, so a quote in yards and a quote in tons differ by about 40% for the same pile.
A ton covers about 100 square feet two inches deep. Delivery is a flat trip fee, commonly $50–120 within a normal radius, so ordering slightly over beats paying for a second load.
Gravel or crushed stone?
They are not the same material. Gravel is naturally rounded; crushed stone is quarried and has angular faces that lock together. Angular stone holds a driveway; rounded gravel rolls out from under the tyres and ruts.
Most yards say "gravel" for both, so do not ask which they sell — ask whether it is angular or rounded, and whether it is washed. Both questions get a straight answer.
