Which soil you actually want
Yards sell several things under the word soil. <strong>Screened topsoil</strong> is the general-purpose choice for lawns and regrading. <strong>Garden or raised-bed blend</strong> is topsoil cut with compost and something coarse, and costs more. <strong>Fill dirt</strong> is subsoil and grows nothing.
None of these are graded to a standard in most US markets, so two yards selling "garden soil" may be selling quite different products. Ask what is in the blend.
Ordering and delivery
Soil is sold by the cubic yard. One yard covers 324 square feet an inch deep, or 81 square feet at the four inches a new lawn wants. It settles 15–20%, so order for the finished depth.
Most yards deliver within 15–30 miles for a flat fee and set a minimum load, commonly three yards. Below about one yard, bagged is usually cheaper once the fee is counted.
