Decorative stone by type
<strong>River rock</strong> is rounded, 1–5 inches, and stays where it is put — the usual choice for dry creek beds and downspout splash areas. <strong>Pea gravel</strong> is a smaller rounded stone, comfortable underfoot and prone to migrating without an edge.
<strong>Flagstone</strong> is sold flat for patios and paths, priced by the ton with coverage set by thickness — roughly 200 square feet per ton divided by the thickness in inches. <strong>Wall stone and boulders</strong> are priced by weight and usually placed by machine.
Cost and coverage
Decorative stone costs considerably more than construction aggregate, and the price rises steeply with size and how far it travelled. A ton of 1–2 inch stone covers about 80 square feet at two inches deep.
Rock is permanent in a way mulch is not: no annual top-up, but it bakes the soil in summer and adds no organic matter, so it is the wrong mulch around plants that want cool ground.
