Measuring Topsoil

What Ten Yards of Topsoil Looks Like

Measuring How Much Topsoil You Need

When it comes to creating a garden, one of the most important decisions you’ll need to make is how much topsoil to buy. Obviously, the more topsoil you have, the better your garden will be, but how do you know how much you need?

One way to measure how much topsoil you need is to calculate the size of your garden in square feet. Once you know the size of your garden, simply multiply that by 1-1.5 inches, which is the depth of topsoil you should aim for. So, if your garden is 1,000 square feet, you’ll need 1,000-1,500 inches of topsoil.
